Improvement of “St. Nicholas” Church: Construction of concrete pavement in the village of Sveti Nikola, Kavarna

In Bulgaria, church temples hold a special place in people’s hearts, and observing traditions often requires walking around the church during major holidays like Easter. Precisely for this reason, the chairman of the church board of the “St. Nicholas” Temple in the village of Sveti Nikola (Kavarna Municipality) contacted us. The building did not have a paved surface around it, which made access and the performance of customs difficult.

The Balchik Build team accepted this responsible task, which involved the construction of 167 sq.m. of new reinforced concrete pavement. Since the ground around the temple was an uncompacted embankment, we had to approach the preparation of the base with extreme caution in order to prevent future settlement.

Project Execution Stages

To ensure uncompromising strength and longevity of the pavement, we strictly adhered to all technological processes:

  • Site preparation: We started with precise compaction and treatment of the entire 167 sq.m. area around the church. This was key to creating a stable base on top of the existing embankment.

  • Edging and insulation: After preparing the soil mass, we proceeded to edging and anchoring the site. Immediately after that, we laid polyethylene underlayment beneath the future concrete pavement. This protects the concrete from rapid moisture loss into the soil and ensures its proper curing.

  • Reinforcement: To secure the pavement against cracking and give it structural strength, we installed a 6 mm thick steel reinforcing mesh. We also anchored reinforcement to the building itself to avoid any future settlement of the pavement.

  • Pouring the concrete: The final stage involved the delivery and precise placement of high-quality B25 class concrete. The pavement was poured and leveled with a thickness of between 10 and 12 cm.

The Result: Accessibility and Completeness

Today, the “St. Nicholas” Temple already has a flat, clean, and stable path that visually completes the building’s facade with its beautiful stone plinth. Worshippers can now peacefully and safely observe their traditions and visit the church, regardless of the weather conditions.
